Das ätherische Öl wird durch Wasserdampfdestillation aus dem Süßgrasgewächs (Gramineae) gewonnen. Der lieblich-weiche Duft erinnert etwas an Geranienblüten. Da es einen hohen Anteil an Geraniol enthält wird es auch oft zur Fälschung von Rosenöl benutzt. Palmarosa wirkt erfrischend und entspannend.
